Project Milestone: Pioneering 3D concrete printing in residential architecture
Project Milestone in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, marks a significant advancement in the application of 3D concrete printing for residential construction. Initiated in 2021, the project has evolved from the successful completion of the first 3D-printed home to the development of four additional multi-story residences, showcasing the scalability and potential of this innovative building method.
Phase 1: The first 3D-printed home
The inaugural house, completed in April 2021, stands as the first legally habitable 3D-printed concrete home in Europe. This single-story dwelling, encompassing 94 square meters, features a spacious living area and two bedrooms. Its distinctive boulder-like design harmonizes with the natural surroundings of Eindhoven's Bosrijk district, exemplifying the architectural freedom afforded by 3D concrete printing.
The realization of this home was the result of a collaborative effort among Eindhoven University of Technology, Van Wijnen, Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix, Vesteda, the municipality of Eindhoven, and Witteveen+Bos. Their joint endeavor aimed to explore the design possibilities and sustainability benefits of 3D concrete printing in housing.
Phase 2: Expansion with multi-story residences
Building upon the success of the initial phase, Project Milestone is progressing with the construction of four new multi-story homes. These residences are designed to derive their structural integrity entirely from the printed concrete, a pioneering achievement in the field. The organic, boulder-inspired designs continue to integrate seamlessly with the wooded environment of the Bosuil area in Eindhoven.
Unlike the prototype, these homes will be available for purchase, with sales expected to commence after the summer holidays. Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with the aim of welcoming residents by the summer of the same year.
Collaborative innovation
Project Milestone exemplifies the synergy between governmental bodies, academic institutions, and industry leaders. The municipality of Eindhoven has played a pivotal role in facilitating the project, while Eindhoven University of Technology has contributed research and model development. Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix has focused on refining the 3D printing process to ensure consistent quality, and Houben / Van Mierlo Architects have provided the visionary designs. Witteveen+Bos is responsible for structural and engineering aspects, with Van Wijnen overseeing construction.
This collaborative approach not only advances the capabilities of 3D concrete printing but also addresses broader goals of sustainability, efficiency, and affordability in housing.
